Can you knit?

皆さんは編み物って得意ですか？

私は小さい時に何度か挑戦したことがありますが、その時は失敗しても良いようにと、練習用に家に余っていた毛糸を使いました。ところがその毛糸の色（ピンク!）が気に入らず、どうしても最後まで編み続けることができませんでした。やはり、何を作るにしても、自分の気に入った素材で作ることは大切です。それがたとえ練習であっても。

なにはともあれ、それ以来編み物はコンプレックスとなり、未だに気軽に手を出せない手芸の一つとなっています。

そんな私とは正反対に、母は編み物がとても上手。

忙しい日常の、ほんの少しの暇を見つけて(作って)は、私なんぞが到底理解しかねる図面に何やら鉛筆で書きいれながら、複雑な模様のセーターやら帽子やら、どんどん編みあげてゆくのです。

「こんなの簡単だよ」と言いながら。

まるで魔法のような母の手。私もいつか手に入れたいです。

Are you good at knitting?

I tried knitting several times when I was a lot younger. I used a spare ball of yarns as a practice just in case for a mess-up. But I didn’t like the colour of the wool (pink!) and it was discouraging. I could never finish knitting anything up. It’s important to choose your favorite materials for whatever the thing you make. Even if it's for a practice.

Anyways, since then knitting became my complex. It’s one of the crafts I can’t do without taking it seriously.

Contrary to me, my mother is really good at knitting.

She finds (or makes) time in busy dairy life and knits up complicated patterned jumpers, caps, and etc as she pencils something in the knit plan which I have no idea how to read.

“It’s easy-peasy.” she says.

The magical hands. I wish I can get them one day.

お手紙だいすき！

私のクリエイティブな友人がイギリスから、スイートでキッチュな愛を送ってくれました。

封筒はおかしくてかわいい絵と、シール、彼女の何でも暗号のように秘密たっぷりにしてしまう独特の書き文字とのコラージュ。彼女の作るものはどれも大好き。

突然のびっくり小包はもちろん私を幸せ気分にしてくれました。

中にはピエール・エ・ジレの小さな本（感激！）と彼女からの手紙とが赤い毛糸で結んであるものと、ミュージアム・オブ・エブリシングのチラシが。

彼女の癖のある字の手紙を読む、というよりも、むしろ解読しながら、始終笑顔の私でした。

その夜遅く、私は人魚の絵を描きました。マザーグースの歌を歌いながら…

君のこと　大きな海で見たよ、

おっと！　失礼。

ピエール・エ・ジレ：ピエール・コモワとジル・ブランシャールのデュオ。とても様式化された写真で作品を発表しているフランス人のアーティスト。海のモチーフや愛を主題に選んだものが多い。

ミュージアム・オブ・エブリシング：ロンドンのNW1、リージェンツ・パークとシャープレシャルストリートの角にある図書館の真裏にあるというファンタスティックな美術館だそうな。
２０１１年２月１１日の金曜日に展覧会＃３が開催予定。

I love letters!

One of my creative friends sent me a sweet and kitsch love from UK.

The envelope was collaged with humorous and pretty illustrations, stickers, and her unique handwritings which almost encrypts every word and makes the whole thing secretive. I love everything she does.

Her surprise parcel certainly made my day.

Inside, there was a small book of Pierre et Gilles (woooo!) and her letter bound together with a red woolen string, and a mini flyer of The Museum of Everything.

As I was deciphering her unique handwriting rather than reading, I just couldn’t help stop smiling.

Later in the evening, I found myself drawing a mermaid, chanting the Mother Goose song…,

I saw you in the ocean,

I saw you in the sea,

I saw you in the bathtub,

Oops! Pardon me.


Pierre et Gilles: Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard. French artists who are producing highly stylised photographs. Most of the time, they choose marine motives and love as subjects. 

The Museum of Everything: apparently fantastic museum situated right behind the library on the corner of Regents Park Road and Sharpleshall Street, London NW1.

Exhibition #3 will be open on Friday 11^th of Feb 2011.

MOONSTRUCK

『月の輝く夜に』という映画を観たことがあるでしょうか？

ニューヨークはブルックリンを舞台にしたイタリア系アメリカ人であるロレッタの婚約をめぐる、ロレッタとその家族のラブ・ストーリーです。

コメディなのでどろどろはしないけれど、登場人物それぞれ、どんな端役の心模様も現実的で、誰もが一度は抱えた、または抱えるであろう悩みや秘密を持っています。

今までに作られた中で最高の映画ではないにしても、私はこの映画がとても好きです。

月がきれいな夜なので、ついこの映画を手にとってしまいました。

この映画にはアットホームな雰囲気で溢れるリストランテ“グランド・ティチーノ”が登場します。店主はボボと呼ばれるイタリア系アメリカ人。馴染みのお客も多く、ボボはただ料理をサーブする以上にお客のことを見ています。きっとボボのレストランはその界隈に住む人たちの生活の一部であり、またそれ以上にお客の人生の一場面に関わってきたようなお店なのでしょう。ロレッタがボーイフレンドにプロポーズされるのも、ボボの店だったように。
私はこの、ボボの店のシーンを見るたびに、なんとも幸せな気分になってしまうのであります。

Have you seen the film MOONSTRUCK before?

It’s a love story set in Brooklyn Heights in Brooklyn, N.Y. It revolves around Loretta’s engagement and her Italian American families' love and lives. Romantic love comedy doesn’t make things heavy or ugly, but each character, even a very small one is sympathetic. Each one has one or two worries or secrets which almost everyone might has been through or will has.

Though it’s not the greatest film ever made, I like this film very much.

A night like tonight with a beautiful moon, I couldn’t help putting this film on.

In this film, there is a ristrante GRAND TICINO with full of homey atmosphere. The owner is an Italian American, Bobo. Lots of regular customers come to dine at Bobo’s and Bobo looks after them well. I guess Bobo’s ritrante is a part of his neighbourhoods' every day life. Moreover, Bobo’s has been taking a big part of the customers’ great moments like when Johnny proposed to Loretta.

Every time I watch the scenes at Bobo’s, I feel happy. It’s inexplainable, but I can't help it.

Artists Talk Event

先日、友人のトークインベント：大竹純子 × さくまはな 「ワタシタチノコトバハドコ？」に行ってきました。

今回は大阪でのイベントでしたが、同じものが東京の 3331 Arts Chiyoda で今月１５日に開催される予定です。

言葉に注目し、コミュニケーションのずれなどをきっかけにひらめくものから創造していくプロセスなど、興味深い内容で、さらに大竹さんとカナダのアーティストのスカイプを経由してのライブ・パフォーマンスもあり、楽しいイベントでした。

私は日本でこういうイベントに参加したのは初めてで、どんなお客さんが来るんだろう？と、自分もお客さんなのにどきどきして出かけました。

お客さんは、ギャラリーのオーナー、大学教授、アーティスト、学生、翻訳家の方々など様々で、このイベントに参加していなければ、お会いできなかったでしょう。

興味のあることには、アンテナを張っておくことって、やはりとても大切だと気付かされました。

大竹さんはアーティストとして私の刺激であり、私が困った時には的確で冷静なアドバイスをくれる、心強い存在です。

東京のイベントが終わったら、ロンドンに帰る彼女。気をつけてね～！

I went to my friends’ talk event: Junko Otake × Hana Sakuma “Watashitachi no kotoba ha doco?” the other day.

It was a pre-event for the same event at 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo on 15^th.

Two artists talked about their creative processes - how they pick up the differences and incongruousness through verbal communications and turn those ideas into their art. Junko also did a live performance with a Canadian artist through Skype. It was a fun event.

 

 

I’ve never joined an art event like this before so I was a bit nervous what kind of audiences will be attend with me though I was also one of them.

There, I met an owner of an art gallery, a professor, an artist, an art student, a translator and other interesting people who I wouldn’t have met if I was not there.

I realised the importance of keep giving your attention to what you are interested in as if you are putting up an invisible aerial to catch a good signal of exciting programs.

 

 

Junko is an artist who always gives me a spur and a friend who gives me a good and apt advice when I have a trouble.

She’s flying back to London after the event in Tokyo. Have a safe journey!

Bon Voyage!

吐く息の白い夜は、あたたかい飲み物を片手に星空を見上げると、冷えた夜空のように心も清々しくなります。
しかしながら、あまりにも寒い夜は毛布にくるまっているほうが良いものです。
さて私は満点の星空、降ってくるような星空というものを、近頃は見ていない気がして、旅に出たいなぁと思う今日この頃です。

列車の旅、飛行機の旅、バイクの旅、などなど手段はいろいろですが、船の旅は憧れます。

ずいぶん昔にフランスのシェルブールからフェリーでアイルランドのコークに渡り、約１カ月ほどバックパックの旅をしたことがありますが、スナフキン気分で甲板から星を見上げたものです。

旅客船の旅と言えば、映画「めぐり逢い」のようなロマンチックなものから、ミュージカル「Anything Goes」のように楽しい航海も。
豪華客船とまでは行かなくても、「麗しのサブリナ」でのボートでの遊覧や小さな船での旅も素敵です。


下の絵は、マネの絵に刺激されて描いたものです。
マネの絵は、水兵さんの服を着ている男の子。
私のは、水兵さんの服を着ている女の子です。
１９世紀後半は、子供が水兵さんの服を着るのが、かわいらしいからという理由でとっても流行ったそうです。
私は子供が大人のように、きちんと作られた服を着ている様が大好きです。


なにはともあれ、これから旅に出るという幸運な方々、素敵な旅を！

On the night I can see my breath white, I go outside with a mug of hot drink on my hand and look up the starry sky, and then my mind become clearer as the frozen heavens.
However, when the night air is too cold, I’d rather stay inside and wrap myself with a blanket.
I feel like I haven’t seen the sky full of stars – almost they are falling down on me – for a long time. That makes me want to go traveling.

There are several ways to travel such as on a train,by air plane, and on a motorcycle, but my favorite one is a voyage.
Many years ago, I took a ferry from Cherbourg (France) to Cork (Ireland) and backpacked around the Ireland about a month.
I remember I looked up the stars from the deck as if I were Snufkin.

The passenger ship journey reminds me of the film An Affair to Remember and the musical Anything Goes.
Even if it’s not a large ship, a boat trip or small ship journey like the ones in Sabrina are also fun!

The illustration above is inspired by Manet’s Henry Bernstein.
Manet’s original is a boy wearing a sailor outfit, but mine is a girl.

In the late 19^th century, it became popular to make children wear the sailor outfits just because they looked cute in those outfits.

I personally like children wearing well-made clothes like adults.

Anyways, if you are one of those lucky ones who go on a trip soon, I say Bon Voyage!

the New Year's baking

「リネアの１２カ月」(クリスティーナ・ビョーク、レナ・アンダーソン 共著) という絵本を読んでいたら、季節の移り変わりを感じながら生活するっていいなぁと思いました。

太陽や月の光の変化、草木の成長に自分のリズムを調和させるのは、自然なことなのでしょうね。

お正月はのんびりと過ごしたので、景気づけに昨日は近くの山に登ってきました。

そんなに高い山ではないのですぐに登れてしまうのですが、急勾配の上、足元には落ち葉がいっぱい。気を抜くと滑り落ちそうになってしまう、なかなか楽しい山登りでした。

頂上からは少し街や海が霞掛かって見えましたが、気分爽快。

用意してきたお茶とビスケットで休憩。空に近くなるとうきうきします。

今日は、お正月の残りの餡と黒豆を使って、あんぱんと黒豆パンを焼きました。

シナモンロールやシュトレンなどは焼いたことがありますが、あんぱんは初めての挑戦だったのですが、何とか上手に焼けました。

パン生地をこねると手があまくていいにおいになって好きです。
焼きたての自家製パンは、やっぱりとてもおいしいです。
次はレーズン入りのシナモンパンを焼きたいなぁと思っています。

I was reading a picture book Linnea’s Almanac (Linneas Jahrbuch by Christina Bjork and Lena Anderson) the other day and thought how wonderful to live as you feel the changes of the seasons. Maybe it’s natural to harmonise yourself with the rhythm of the Sun and the Moon, vegetations’ growth.

 

 

Yesterday I climbed a nearby mountain after the lazy New Year. Just to give myself a kick. It’s not a high mountain so you can conquer very easily but it’s very steep and full of fallen leaves on the hill make you slip if you weren’t careful. So it was a good fun.

The view from the summit was a bit hazy, but I felt refreshing. I had a break with tea and biscuits. I get excited when I feel the sky is closer.

Today I baked sweet azuki beans buns and kuromame beans buns, using the leftover New Year dishes.

I’ve baked cinnamon rolls and stollens before, but never tried these kinds of buns so I was a bit nervous but it turned out well.

I like the sweet smell lingers on your hands after kneading the bread dough.

Home baked bread is the best after all.

I’m thinking about baking hot cross buns next time.
