Toulouse

Spring has come in Toulouse

Le Maidon d'OS

grand café

A carousel!!

Our last lunch

A ship in the sky

It's been a while since I said I will write about my trip to Europe...

At the end of March, I was in Toulouse.
My brother has been studying at Léda Toulouse (L'Ecole professionnelle De l'Acteur) and he was going to have his graduation show there.
My missions were to see his show as a representative of the family and also to examine his body as a Plates trainer. He has been having a very bad lower back pain for years.

The last time we met was in October, 2008. I remember he came over to London to see me as a rehab just after he had an operation. So it's been around 5 years since I saw my brother last.
I was nervous about how much I could do for him as I was a novice as a Pilates trainer, however, my teacher, master Ichise encouraged me a lot. So I spent my flight time and waiting time for my connecting flight for making notes, thinking about a training menu, going over the last lesson of personal training and anatomy.

When I finally arrived in Toulouse, it was nearly midnight and very dark.
My brother and his roommate Nadim came to pick me up at the airport.
They were having a special sign for me. It was the same sign I made for my brother to welcome him at Heathrow Airport in 2008.
At their place, we had a glass of red wine and a bit of cheese and chocolate.

They turned their "library" into my bed room.
Though it was after midnight, I had a very first session of Pilates with my brother.
After that, I went to bed straight away. I travelled nearly 24 hours.

beautiful Toulouse

Next morning was Monday. They had an empty fridge after the busy weekend. So we all went out to get some breakfast and also to do food shopping.
We had petit déjeuner at a local boulanger. I always think breads are so much nicer in Europe, especially in France than the ones we have in Japan . Even a whole wheat roll and cheese I had on KLM air plane were very good.  I enjoyed my coffee, pain au chocolat, a baguette with apricot jam.

One of the strangest things when you travel in foreign countries is that even some cheap plastic knife and fork look nicer. Or is that a quite Japanese way of thinking?
Food shopping was a great fun. I love foreign country's supermarkets. I can be there forever looking at graphics of the labels of unfamiliar products, curious foods, different customs through the way of displaying and serving products.
I bought some cereals, nuts and dried fruits, and a pack of fig rolls. Fig roll is my absolute favourite and I can't buy them in Japan. The best fig roll I believe is Fignewton which you can buy in US. I also bought a tube toothpaste and hand cream (of my favourite French brand Le Petit Marseillais).

It was just before Easter

In the afternoon, I visited Léda with my brother. Léda is a small school. I met many of my brother's friends and teachers at the foyer where everyone was chilling out between lessons. Everyone was nice and friendly to me. It was a real shame that I couldn't speak French at all.
Some of them could speak a bit of English and we spoke slowly to each other.

At the entrance of Léda

In the evening, Nadim and I went to see the show.
It was the first time to see my brother's stage on live. I've seen his first year show on video once.
I don't think I am a total amateur about acting. I used to work at an acting school in London as a costume designer and maker, so I've seen rehearsals and shows enough to understand what makes the actors believable as a character on stage. I love plays and films, but through my work, my point of view is always as a creator, not one of the audiences. Most of the time, I can kind of see if the actor is good or not so good if I see them when they are off stage. My brother wanted me to criticise him and give him a constructive advice.

So I didn't watch my brother in a favourable light thought I wasn't going to anyways.
I watched his an actor.
My honest opinion is that he was calmly reading the timings and audience's expectations. Doing the best he could for the stage of that night with his co-stars.
I couldn't understand French at all, but I could see the characters, their relationships and power balances, and what's going on in general. Maybe I could see more because of the text became signs to me, not understandable sentences. I was enjoying feeling actors' flows of aura, their chemistry, tempos, and reactions of the audiences.
After each night's performance, I spoke with my brother's friends and teachers.
Everyone was so kind to me even we needed to speak via my brother's translations.
It was fun discussing about what worked today and what to improve for tomorrow with my brother.

One of the amazing things was that a lot of people I met at the performance, asked me about Tsunami and Fukushima.
It was grateful to know many people outside of Japan have been caring about us and thinking about us. So, on be half of all Japanese people, thank you all.

My brother and I worked on Pilates sessions whenever he had time.
Sometime we did an hour session. Other time fifteen minutes.
I focused on training mainly gluteus mediuses, iliopsoas, and obliques and so on to mobilise his legs while stabilising his pelves. We also did breathing exercises. It helped him a lot and he could feel the differences after every session. I was so happy to hear him saying he felt better.
One of the good things was that he didn't feel tired the day after the third performance. Most of the other casts were talking about they were getting tired from the performances, but he was fine.

I suggested to record their last performance and I suddenly became a camera operator to film it.
It was a great fun, but unfortunately, the battery ran out at the middle of the performance and I used my camera to continue filming. However, I've never used the recording mode of my camera before, and somehow the sound was not synchronised with the picture. I hope I can fix that soon.

Me, enjoying chocolate chaud

My brother and I decided to spend relaxed afternoon before the final performance.
He said there is a café he wanted to take me. We met one of the co-stars Camille at the bus stop. When my brother said to her that we were going to the café near the city hall, she said she wanted to go, so we all went there. I was happy to be able to go with her.
On the way to there, my brother and I were very hungry as we hadn't had lunch, so we bought hot panini at a shop. Camille bought some pastries. We all walked to a park behind the city hall and sat on one of the benches. There was a street jazz band playing some happy tunes and people were standing around them. It was a fine day and I felt so nice as it was not too cold or too hot. I cherished the moment so much.
The café was grand with Bucchus engravings on the wall, paintings on a ceiling and some chandeliers
were shining. I ordered a cup of chocolat chaud. It's one of my treats in Europe. In Japan, we never have a nice cup of hot chocolate as thick as the one in Europe. Two years ago, I had a cup of very thick dark chocolate with rock salt in Praha. It was served with spoon to scoop it.
The chocolate chaud which came with a delicious spoon shaped cookie was really nice and I had to ask my brother to take my picture enjoying it deeply.

My brother in Le Meson d'Os

The last performance was very steady and every one had their best. I was focusing on filming, so I couldn't really enjoy the atmosphere. The audience was very cool, but I thought the casts handled that well.
One of the casts had a little party after the final performance.
We stayed at his house till dawn.
That day was the day I was leaving Toulouse. Before my air plane, my brother and I cooked spaghetti with vegetable and tomato and salad.
Nadim came home for lunch so we three all had good lunch together.
After Nadim went back to work, I had one last Pilates session with my brother and headed to the airport.

While we were waiting for the airport express and the bus stop. I suddenly had a feeling of I must had checked a bit earlier than now.
It was very strange that both of my brother and I were on air plane so many times, but only this time, we checked in on-line and we completely forgot to think about the time I check in my suitcase 40 minutes before on board.
So we got to the airport and rushed to the check in counter if they could take my suitcase, but the monsieur at the counter said Non!
I couldn't fly without my suitcase so I had to see my flight off and book another one to go to London.
Our worry was that if I could be in London before the day is over.
Luckily, one flight was delaying due to a snowy weather, so I could get hole on that flight.
I had some problems. The new flight was going to Gatwic, not Heathrow, so I had to let my friend who was going to pick me up at Heatrow know about my flight change. My mobile phone was not working so I couldn't get in touch with my friend. Only on-line so if she didn't see my message on facebook, she would miss me and so I would miss her.
So after we confirmed the new flight, I sent a message to my friend and hoped her to see it before she left home. Miraculously, she was on-line and replied me back while I was still on-line. She said she could find me at Victoria station so still I had to do was to go to Victoria as soon as I got to London.
In fact, she thought about a better plan and decided to pick me up at the Gatwick but I didn't see her second message, so I was still nervous about the journey after Gatwick. I wished if only my mobile was working.

A misfortune usually turns into a blessing.
I had long waiting time  due to the delay of my new flight at the Toulouse airport, so I had a proper chat with my brother over coffee. (Tought I had to stay one more day in Toulouse if the flight wasn't delayed for a start.)
Thought I was with him most of the time while I was in Toulouse, we never had a proper time to sit down quietly and talk.
So we talked about many things and that helped both of us.
When I was finally leaving, he said to me that I grew up as a human since we saw each other last.
That was a great complement to me.
Even I myself feel that my nerves were strained all the time while I was working freelance in London. My faces in picture of that time were a bit edgy even when I was smiling.
I like me better these days.
Merci my brother. I love you and see you soon.

vege and lentil soup I made many times for my brother
My France trip made me realise many things.I'm so glad that I could go at this timing.

I couldn't write about every single event I experienced with my brother and his lovely friends, but thank you so much everyone.
I love you all.

about a girl I know

twilight I saw on that day.

Dear readers. How are you?

3.11.
I guess every one of you had this day with various thoughts.
Towards reconstruction, two years has passed since then.
I hear there are still a large number of people can’t get out of the temporary housings.

I want to write about a girl I know though it’ll be a bit personal.
She was 13 when I met her. A quiet, but beautiful girl who naturally attracts people’s attention.
She was pure, but she was always late for school. She spent loads of nights out of the house.
From her words, I found that her father was away on business and wasn’t at home.
Her mother seemed to me tried too hard to fill in her father’s position, so they made quarrels whenever they talked about her school life. It was tiring so that made her choose a lifestyle which she didn’t need to see her mother or anyone while she’s at home. A chain reaction of a vicious spiral.
Whenever her father was coming back, she was very excited and happily told me about it. But once he went back on a business trip again, she returned to a lifestyle of keeping irregular hours.

Through my conversations with her, I learnt that her father has been building temporary housings in the stricken areas after 3.11.
My heart ached a lot.

People who lost their houses or escaped from the nuclear power plant area need places to live. And people who make the places are also needed. We need hands for clean up the mess of the nuclear power plant.
People who have been directly doing reconstruction works and those people’s families are greatly determined and paying tremendous sacrifices.
When we try to get something back, do we need to suffer more than we already did?
Maybe only the tender feelings and thoughts between people can soften those pains.
If the things that were made by human hands can only revive by human hands, a hardened human heart can only breathe again by putting it together with other human’s heart beat.
That’s why we shouldn’t neglect our lives, to love others, to cherish the earth, and above all, to love ourselves.

The girl will become 15 and be a high school student from this spring.
She gave me a beautiful smile at her graduation ceremony.

I want to cheer for her and her upcoming future.
I hope she’ll be able to love herself more.

in NAGANO Part2

These days I feel spring has come in the warm and slow twilight as if someone is seeping layers of thin Indian ink into the sky.
Well, I still haven’t finished writing about Nagano, so I rewind my brain time to the winterly Nagano...

On the second day in Nagano.
Though my friend Miho told me she couldn’t sleep well as her feet were so cold during the night, I had a very good sleep. Probably because of some lymph massages and Pilates before I went to bed, the hot spring, the warm bed room which Miho kindly warmed up with a stove, or the fluffy futon her mom prepared for me.
At 8-ish, we lazily got out of the futon, but it was so cold once we did, so it took us a bit more time to go downstairs. After we went down in a living room, we lazily stretched ourselves in kotatsu (a Japanese foot warmer frame) again.
We took lots of time till we had breakfast in the end.

As we planned on a previous day, we went to Zōzan shrine.
It was a shrine built for Mr. Zōzan Sakuma (usually called Shōzan Sakuma) who played an active and important role at the end of Edo era (mid 19th century) in Japan.
At the outside of Torii gateway, there was a note saying Off Your Horse and a Carriage. I felt of the times by a word Hourse.
Mr. Zōzan Sakuma was a wisdom itself. He was a brain of Japan. I wanted to share his incredibility and I eagerly wished myself good luck at the shrine.
After that we took a picture in front of a stature of Mr. Z
ōzan on his whie horse, and we went to the Ikeda Masuo Museum.
It was a long time since I saw his exhibition, so I was very excited to see his works again.
Matsushiro, where Miho lives, used to be a castle town, so there are still so many old houses and shrines and temples. I saw some old houses such as the Sanada’s residence and the old Higuchi’s house. It was a very fine day and the afternoon went slowly.
We had lunch at the restaurant next to the museum where Miho told me it’s famous for steamed rice with Japanese chestnuts. They served it in a bento-box size wicker trunk with a sheet of sweet-smelling bamboo leaf. There were lots of chestnuts in steamed rice. It was accompanied with delicate dishes of flowering ferns, beans, and bulbils of Japanese mountain yam.

After we filled our stomachs, we drove to Zenkōji again to do Okaidan-meguri which we couldn’t do last time.
Okaidan-meguri is to go down right under the main Buddha in the dark and find a padlock of the heaven’s door. Going under the floor means pitch dark you can’t even see your own body.
By touching the padlock, you are connected with the main Buddha above it and get a promise he will greet you at the heaven’s gate when you get there.
Sounded interesting enough for me to throw myself in a dark (I know it’s not a pious attitude), but I tried right away anyways.
At first, we went to Nai-jin (inner temple) and faced to Ruri-dan (where Buddah sits) to burn incense.
Nai-jin has about a hundred and fifty tatami mats and it was icy cold.
In the dark, the scent of incense and gleams of gold decorations were slowly taking me away from the reality.
The entrance of Okaidan-meguri was short but steep steps toward under the floor. It was dark enough already, but as I went down step by step, Miho who was going in front of me melted into the darkness and I felt like I was vanishing away when I stepped into it.
We had to go forward as we keep touching the wall on our right hand side, but it's too dark to see a thing.
I sensed a feeling of the smooth wooden wall.
Darkness made me feel like the ceiling was low and I bent my knees a bit so I wouldn’t hit my head on anything. My fingers were frozen up by touching an icy cold wall so I wanted to let my hand go and warmed it up a bit, but it was kind of scary to do so.
I closed my eyes every now and then even in a complete darkness.

...By and by, I heard a sound of rattling heavy metals which Miho must be creating by touching the padlock. I felt the wall concaved like there was a door so I glided my hands on the place where it seemed as a door. Then there is was. The padlock.
After that I carried on going through the darkness by touching the right hand side wall and I eventually saw an arrow of light from above and steps to the floor.
I thought that the inside of the temple was dark and cold before I went down the floor, but after I came out of it, I feel warmer and blighter.
I thought it’s kind of similar to life itself.
Even if you feel like this is the hardest time ever happened to you, after you had even harder time, you feel nothing about the one before. Sometime you even find some good things you couldn’t see in it before.
After Zenkōji, we had some tea at a cake shop HEIGORO where we couldn’t go on a previous day.
It was a very fashionable place so we stayed longer than we thought we would be.

In the evening, we went for a walk with Miho’s dog Max.
Dusk light over the mountain was beautiful.
For dinner, Miho’s mom prepared us some oyaki (well-known Nagano’s local dumplings), savoury pancakes with nira (onion-ish taste Chinese chive), and grilled rice balls (soy source favour and miso fravor). She said sorry for very snack-like dinner, but it was gorgeous enough for me.
Nagano is very famous for miso, and I loved it.

We went to the same hot spring as we did on a previous night.
This time, Miho’s nephew and niece came along with us.
I warmed myself up in the hot spring and when we got back, we found Max was in a naughty corner. But once we started to eat some apples, he shamelessly came out of it and he saw scoled again...
Miho gave me a lift to the night coach stop.
Usually I need to go to the coach station earlier just in case of something happened and that makes me really tired. But this time, the stop was only 5 minutes drive from Miho’s place.
Before long, the night coach came and I got on it. I slept all the way through until the next morning.

Next time I’m visiting Nagano in spring.
We’ll be able to see Japanese apricots in bloom around that time, Miho said.
Soon, her wedding comes.
I still can’t lose my concentration yet.

If you are going to visit Nagano, I recommend them.

in NAGANO Part1

The local's fav place. Delicious!

The golden heels are not norrowed but we found for the wedding.

I've never seen icicles like that!

March it is.
I can see Japanese apricots and narcissuses are in bloom where I live.

At the end of February, I visited snowy Nagano to do the third fitting of the wedding dress I’ve been making for my friend, Miho.
We actually started discussing about the dress since last summer, but we had talked about it while we were art students in UK. So we are turning the idea into a reality. I simply thrilled.
I thank her for letting me make such an important dress.
What would be more honourable than this?

I took a night coach to Nagano.
I didn’t have any nice down jacket, so I wasn’t ready until I wrapped a Scottish quilt around my waist and a woollen scarf and snood around my neck.

On the coach, it was warm enough and I was tired enough to sleep like a log. Before I knew, I found myself in early morning Nagano.
I got off at the nearest interchange from Miho’s house and jumped on her car. She was kindly waiting for me at the coach stop standing in the snow.
It was before sunrise and the world was blue and she gently drove the snowy road. At her house, her dad came out to get my suitcase and as I was trying to do it myself, a jolly beagle jumped on my knees. In the kitchen where her nephew who was going to his basketball game was hurriedly eating his breakfast, I greeted her mom. She served us a delicious breakfast and the scene was suddenly changed into “Me, eating breakfast in my friend’s house, winter, Nagano”.

After I sorted myself and my stuffs out, we did a dress fitting. It was as same as last time. I didn’t have to alter it so much. So the fitting was finished without any problem and I realised that my worries were groundless.
In the afternoon, we went to a dress shop to choose accessories. We had a light meal at the soba noodle place near the dress shop and talked about the rest of the schedules.

The dress shop was a beautiful place and because everything was the first time for me at the shop like this, it was very interesting.
A staff in charge led us and while we were sitting on a European style couch, she served some peach tea in pretty china.
There was a couple next to our booth choosing the bride’s dress. I was gazing at them out of the corner of my eye and thought about the special power of the wedding dress, and the fact I was making one too. The weight of the responsibility was massive on my head, but so far, Miho is so happy about what I’ve been making and that flatters me enough to move on. I reinforced my will to make our dress marvellous.

After the accessory fitting went smoothly, by the time we were out of the shop the snow was dancing in the air.
It was cold, but I thought that is one of the good features of Nagano. We put up umbrellas and visited Zenkō-ji (temple).
We walked up to the main hall through the Niōmon (aka a Deva gate) and the Sanmon (a main gate). As we walked through a shopping district in the precincts, there were many lodgings for pilgrims stood in row.
It was already getting dark and snowing so there were not many people around, but in the main hall, there was the absolute silence that absorbs any sound into the air.
At the front of the hall, there was a Binzurusonjya or Pindola Bharadvaja was sitting in the lotus position, and his face has almost gone. Miho told me that he is known as “a Rubbing Arhat” because he had a strong healing power so if you rub a part of the effigy corresponding to the sick part of your body it’s cured.
I rubbed his back instead of my brother.
Then I rubbed his right hand and for my dress work and his stomach for my Pilates core, but fingers crossed on those ones.,,
I was surprised by the fact that his face was almost flat and smooth from rubbing by many people, but it was a very gentle face. Miho said how incredible the human’s rubbing hand power was and I totally agreed with her.

It was late and we couldn’t do Okaidan-meguri (going down right under the main Buddha in the dark and find a padlock of the heaven’s door.) nor have tea break at Miho’s favourite café, but we bought some souvenirs at a famous chili shop Yawataya Isogorō, and a preserved food shop St. Cousair.

In the evening, we went to a hot spring near her house. I relaxed in very brown hot water as it was a sulphur spring.
When we got back her house, we happily had a feast with her brothers and their families. Her mom prepared some vegetable tempura, sashimi, a scrumptious dish of kuruma-bu (aka fu: bread like pieces of dried wheat gluten in wheel shapes) and beef and onion, salad and deep fried chicken, a dish of Japanese yam and Pollack roe, and her dad’s special pickles. The even opened up YEBISU which was my favourite. I was keep saying “This will be the last!” but kept emptying my glass as they pour some more. I went Nagano as a job, but it was a beginning of an unexpected short holiday.

At first, I thought Max was a sausage dog, not a beagle.
He has a "Maximum" pot belly.
